D Avenue Nursery was started 30 years ago by Ruth Shiohira and her husband to provide fresh, locally sourced plants to the Anacortes community. Ruth sold the business to retire at the end of 2015.
In Spring of 2016, Marianne Mach purchased the business and commenced a total renovation of the property and scope of the business. Her goal was to create a welcoming space for a loyal customer base that had built up since the Nursery’s inception, as well as maintain the consistent, quality service provided. She cleaned up, repaired, and rejuvenated the site, retaining the charming existing structures while rebuilding display tables and bringing in new merchandise.
Marianne has also owned gift shop and restaurant businesses in Anacortes, and her lifelong love of flowers and gardens has led to her new venture into retail garden service.
D Avenue Nursery now offers an expanded retail inventory including annuals, perennials, herbs, organic vegetable starts, trees and shrubs. All plants are of high quality and sourced from local growers. A variety of additional products such as fertilizers, hanging baskets, garden art and gifts are also available.
Supported by her team, Marianne has given Fidalgo Island’s oldest retail garden center a new lease on life, and encourages people to visit, share the beauty of the gardens and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere that has been created.
